Major Research Areas

Public administration and public policy:
Current issues in public sector management, including civil service reform; the transformation of public enterprises and privatization; the ethics of public servants; institutional analysis of public service delivery; policy design.

Comparative politics:
Development politics (with particular reference to China, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries), including electoral behaviour in Hong Kong; municipal management in China; public personnel administration in China and Hong Kong; the role of women in China and the Third World; central-regional relationship in China (with reference to Guangdong and Shanghai); comparative Asian bureaucracies.

International relations:
International and regional politics in East Asia, including international security in the Asia-Pacific region; the international political economy of East Asian development; human rights and foreign policy; China's foreign relations; China-Taiwan relations; international dimension of Hong Kong's development.

Political theory:
Contemporary political theories of liberalism, social justice, democracy, welfare rights and Marxism; moral theories; Aristotle's political theory.

Departmental Requirements

Students are required to participate in Departmental seminars, make seminar presentations, lead tutorials and assist in activities organized by the Department.
