Computer systems and networking

Information systems
Computer vision for control and automation, defect detection, optical communications, stability study of dynamical systems, 3D reconstruction of object from a sequence of 2D images, the design of robust control systems and controllers in robotics, imaging processing, network performance study, and intelligent transportation systems.

Biomedical engineering
Application of computing, electronics and other technology in biomedical field, especially in medical signal processing related to health care. One active area is to extract and detect changes of very weak evoked potential signal from high noise background by adaptive filtering, artificial neural network filters and wavelet methods. Other projects include fast and sensitive non-evasive detection of venous air embolism; analysis and modeling of the multi-catheter multi-channel electrode signal in heart chambers; and blind signal method for signal estimation. In the medical image processing area, projects include detection of tumours in MRI images, processing of pathological images, thermogram images analysis, and matching of x-ray images.

Energy systems and electric vehicles
Advanced electric vehicle technology; advanced high frequency switch mode power supply technology; power systems planning and design methodologies; integrated CAD environment for power systems analysis; optimization and simulation; applications of information technologies in power systems; harmonic pollution monitoring; power quality; building services.

Microelectronics, optoelectronics and VLSI
Use of semiconductors for making electronic devices and circuits, which can be applied in high-speed computer and communication systems, high-resolution display systems and high-sensitivity detection systems. Moreover, fast and robust algorithms are being developed to speed up the design of these circuits and systems. The scope includes high-quality gate dielectrics for MOS transistors based on various semiconductors, micro-sensors, optical micro-arrays, LED's, organic semiconductor devices, nano-structures, ultra-wideband fibre-based source and widely-tunable parametric laser source for bio-photonic applications, EDA and CAD algorithms for the design of filters and signal converters, and efficient circuit simulators based on model order reduction and large-scale matrix equation solvers.

Telecommunications
MIMO communications systems, ultra-wide band technologies; spread spectrum techniques; multi-carrier technologies; wideband spread spectrum transceiver design; multi-media source coding and protocol design; advanced modulation techniques; mobile channel modeling and frequency planning; multi-access techniques and tele-traffic optimization; mobile/wireless networks; high-speed networks; subband coding of digital audio signal; perceptual subband coding of image and video; modulated filter banks; multiplier-less perfect reconstruction filter banks; 3D multimedia; digital imaging technology; robust adaptive filtering; subspace tracking for blind channel identification in impulse noise environment; constrained optimization; transform algorithms.

Departmental Requirements

Candidates are required to make an oral presentation of their research proposal as part of the procedure for the confirmation of candidature. Each candidate is also required to give at least one research seminar before submission of thesis.
