The Faculty of Arts was founded in 1912 and is one of the oldest and largest faculties in the University. It presently consists of the following Schools:

School of Chinese (Chinese Studies, Chinese Language Division, and Chinese Language Enhancement Programme)

School of English (English Studies, and Language & Communication Programme)

School of Humanities (Comparative Literature, Fine Arts, History, Linguistics, Music, and Philosophy disciplines)

School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Japanese Studies, Language Centre, American Studies, and European Studies Programmes)
 
Postgraduate Studies by Research (MPhil/PhD)

Schools are able to offer supervision in a wide range of areas of study, and details of the main areas are given later in this section. In 2006 the Faculty had approximately 250 registered research postgraduate students.
