Chinese language:
We welcome applications in research areas concerning the Chinese language, including, but not limited to, synchronic and diachronic studies on the phonology, syntax, semantics and etymology of classical Chinese, modern Chinese and the Chinese dialects.
Chinese literature:
We welcome research applications in the areas of classical, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, including prose, poetry, fiction, xiqu and literary criticism.
Chinese history:
The School of Chinese is renowned for its historical research in imperial China , especially the Ming and Qing periods. Areas of specialization include political history, intellectual history, history of science and technology, legal systems, political institutions, examination and education systems and historiography.
Chinese culture:
The School of Chinese has a distinguished track record of excellence in the teaching of Chinese culture. Topics include traditional and twentieth-century Chinese culture, Christianity and Chinese culture, and Chinese civilization.
Chinese thought:
Applications in any area of Chinese thought will be considered. Our teachers in the field specialize in Confucianism and Buddhism.
Translation:
We will consider research applications in any area of translation and interpreting. Our teaching staffs have however active specializations in the following: translation criticism, translation theories, the linguistic and cultural dimensions of the translation practice, translators' strategies and translations of the Ming-Qing period.
School Requirement |
Each student will normally be required to make a presentation
in a research seminar during his or her course of study.
